Overview

The Whale Trail is an unforgettable hiking experience through the unspoilt beauty of De Hoop Nature Reserve. Stretching from Potberg to Koppie Alleen, the route covers approximately 55 km and includes five overnight stops, with hikers spending the first night at Potberg before beginning the trail.

Along the way, hikers are rewarded with sweeping coastal views, rich fynbos vegetation, and a landscape that is both varied and exceptionally scenic. The route is considered fairly strenuous, with sections that vary in intensity, making it best suited to reasonably fit and prepared hikers.

De Hoop is internationally recognised as one of the best land-based whale-watching destinations in the world. From June to November, the coastline comes alive as southern right whales migrate here to breed and care for their young.

Trail Experience

The trail begins in the Potberg area and unfolds across a spectacular route through mountains, fynbos, cliffs, and coastline before ending at Koppie Alleen. Each day offers a different perspective of the reserve’s biodiversity and natural beauty, creating a hiking experience that is both physically rewarding and visually unforgettable.

The experience is designed as a package for groups of either six or twelve hikers. Reservations are limited to these group sizes, and the tariff includes a shuttle service from Koppie Alleen, where the trail ends, back to the Potberg tourism office and parking area.

Please note that children under the age of eight are not permitted on the trail.
