The Garden Route

CALLED THE GARDEN OF EDEN”……. A beauty that feeds the soul ……

This is not a route of well kept gardens…. A misperception of many…a born and bred South Africa will need a life time to explore this magical area….but for our visitors, a glimpse of this magic can be experienced within three to four days.

The Term “Garden Route” comes from the regular rainfall throughout the year allowing an abundance of luxuriant vegetation, which is such a change from the normal South African weather pattern.

This scenically stunning segment of coastal belt extends from the Storms River to Mossel Bay. One side is the Indian Ocean, it’s shores a delightful compound of rocky cliff cove, broad embayment and the beach, navigable river estuary, lagoon and lake; on the other are the wooded slopes of the Tsitsikamma and Outeniqua mountains; between the two is the coastal terrace, the aptly named “garden”. A French traveler once wrote “the flowers that grow there in millions, the mixture of pleasant scents which arise from them, the pure and fresh air one breaths, all makes one stop and think Nature has made an enchanted abode of this beautiful place”

The area offers visitors a huge selection of accommodation options from camping, self catering to luxury lodges, Boutique hotels and a myriad of Guesthouses and Bed & Breakfasts. There is also an endless variety of activities, from gentle hikes in the forest to adrenaline pumping abseiling, Golfing, steam train excursions, paddling, and visits to Khoisan (the original inhabitants of the area) rock shelters. Most popular in Knysna is oyster tasting, visit to the heads, cruise on the lagoon
This area is all about Nature and there are a number of stunning private, municipal, provincial and National Nature Reserves.

Visit the “Garden Route” and discover its magic…..
